Finally, the day for which I was waiting for past few months arrived. I remember when our seniors told us about their experience at Western Motorsports, how they worked day & night, their learning and all. The same day I thought that such kind of experience will be a good way to test my abilities, to go for an adventure and to enjoy the Real Motor Rally, I had just seen such kind of rallying on some sports channel but seeing the real event with my eyes will be just amazing.

I remember the day when Anukraman Sir came to our college with his team members and gave a briefed all of us followed by a small aptitude test. Those questions were so easy that sometime it made us feel that is this really they want to ask us or we are misinterpreting the questions, but when in last they discussed those questions answers with us it made us chuckle on our own mistakes. But got a lesson with the same that never take life too seriously, sometime solution can be found much more easily no need to make things complicated in your life.

Day after that we were called for a small get-together with the team Western Motorsports and 6 of us went together at the meeting spot from where we all were taken to the place which was a surprise for us. Wooooow!!!!! It was the damn track, full of muddy soil, we were not able to drive our bikes properly in that soil, but it was giving a feel like “YES” this is the place where we want to come again and again and can ride our bikes however we like. The muddy soil was giving a feel of a dirt racer to us. Anukraman Sir also briefed us about, how the whole process works, he told us about the importance of selection of routes for the racing track and how traffic moves. It was a great experience. Waiting enthusiastically for the great event to start and to be part of that event….

JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride - A Journey

In its 3rd year JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride ‘2011 is an event organized by Jaipur based Western Motorsports, a group of young Motorsport enthusiasts. Who aim at not only encouraging other enthusiasts to promote motorsports through their participation but also promote the long forgotten historical places of Rajasthan and adventure tourism. JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride is a T(Time) S(Speed) D(Distance) rally event where participants are judged on their skills of managing these factors in the event and score the least of penalties while travelling on the prescribed route. The event attracts participation from all over the country and has become a major event in motor sport calendar of India.

1st JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride 09 was an event of 180kms, organised in two parts. The first leg started from the magnificent Jal Mahal crossing through the historic Amber fort to the Haunted fort of Bhangarh. The rally drew attention towards Pratapgarh, Ajabgarh and haunted fortified town of Bhangarh. The event continued to its second phase from Bhangarh back to the Pink City Restaurant which in itself is a historical place enroute Raisar and Ramgarh . The main attraction of the second leg was the Jalebi loops as it also tried the participant's Tulip (Road Book) reading skills. The event was divided into 4wheel and 2 wheel category. In total there were 52 entries of which 50 took part and 48 finished the rally. As this event saw a culmination of hard core Rallyists and novices, the event turned out to be a huge success which not only brought a lot of positive vibe and encouragement, but also promises of future participation for the coming years.

30th July 2010 dawned with a promise of more participation for the 2nd JK Tyre Monsoon Ride '10. It was a 3 day event which was flagged off from the magnificent Jal Mahal on the 01st of August and finish at the Angara discotheque, Jaipur where the results would be declared. The event was flagged off by his Late His Highness Maharaja Bhawani Singh ji of Jaipur. The encouragement of the previous year’s event had Western Motorsports make their event more adventurous and challenging. The participants this time had a stretch of 300kms of the beautiful Aravali to cover but they had to battle through the rocky roads, dig and force their machines through heavy monsoon made mud puddles and deep water sloshes. This time the event was a really challenging affair for all participating vehicles as it could be seen by the end of day the beating each had taken to overcome the challenge. This time the event had exposed it's participants to a rougher challenges that would be coming up with the RIDE in the years to follow. The event was a new experience for the previous year's participants as well as the new ones who were competing for the first time. So, it ended with a promise of the unexpected for the event to come up in 2011.
3rd JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride 2011 being held from 29th July to 31st July, is once again going go through the beautiful Aravali Range and showcase the nostalgic effect of Monsoon on the Desert state. 29th and 30th July will have pre event activities with press conference on 29th July and on 30th July will have competitor’s briefing and ceremonial flag off with Vehicle and Document Scrutiny on both the days. 31st July will be Rally Day starting with picturesque Jal Mahal in background. The Ride will hosted in a grand manner with grand beautiful venues, photographers from abroad covering it, event going live on international automobile portals, lot more trophies to be taken home and more. It will be a real test of navigation skill and patience. Driving in controlled speeds which are also going to put up a challenge for driver in the back roads of Rural Jaipur. In total the rally will cover around 250 kms. To promote motor sport and adventure tourism in Rajasthan a Trophy for locals has been introduced called JEYPORE CUP, for the first timers at the rally there is a ROOKIE CUP and to have more and more women participating and showcase the women power a new trophy for BEST COUPLE also has been introduced along with pre-existing ALL WOMEN category.

The categories and trophies for the event are
1. Over All 1st, 2nd & 3rd in Four Wheelers.
2. All Women 1st, 2nd & 3rd in Four Wheelers.
3. Over All 1st, 2nd & 3rd in Two Wheelers.
4. Best Couple in Four Wheelers.
5. Best Couple in Two Wheelers.
6. Rookie Cup in Four Wheelers.
7. Rookie Cup in Two Wheelers.
8. Jeypore Cup in Four Wheelers.
9. Jeypore Cup in Four Wheelers.
10. Anhimanyu Award for youngest participant in the event.
11. John Singh Award for contribution and achievement in Motor Sport by a person from Rajasthan.

In the event awareness for water harvesting and plantation will also be raised by distributing relevant material to the participants, visitors and people on route.

The Monsoon Ride: What to expect this year?

Ever since we conceptualized this signature event of ours, we had always one thing in mind that we have to offer something unique each time. A lot of hard work and toil has been put in to bring this event this far and we are still trying our best to give all the competitors an experience of a lifetime.

Whenever you create something, you are bound to make mistakes and that’s how you learn. The last two editions of the event can be categorized under the term “learning curve”. Some mistakes and some unfortunate happenings by gods grace made us learn that when you are running an event, “perfection” has to be the key.

This year, we are trying to put in all those lessons, which we have learnt over the years to give all the participants something worth remembering. This time JK-Tyre The Monsoon Ride 2011 is going to be trickier, shorter and far more technical. With some new categories for novices and for those who live at the home place of Western Motorsports, Jaipur, and also for couples to boost up the number of female participants.

While you are on the track, if you get lost or miss a TC, don’t be surprised because you are bound to make mistakes. Tulip reading would be something that you need to practice again and again before coming to the event. Always remember that mathematics is your best friend if you are planning to give a shot at TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) rallying.

As we set out from Delhi to reach Hotel Pink City, driving in our Gypsy with Anirban on the wheel, hardly did we know the challenges that Monsoon had set for the participants of “The Monsoon Ride 2010”. Apprehensions are always there in the beginning of any event; this year’s main concern was the rain. Monsoon had come announced in true sense, turning the ride to Jaipur into a lush green stretch of beautiful trees and undergrowth. When we reached Jaipur, the weather was pleasant and refreshing; there were signs of heavy rainfall but none at the present. It was nearly past midnight, the Jal Mahal stood elegantly lit with the water surrounding sparkling in its reflection. We reached the hotel and were settled in our room, already pre-allocated for the officials. I hurried off to sleep, preparing for the next day’s activity, while Anirban hung around with Govind ji, Yogesh sir and Yatin discussing the plan for scrutiny to follow the next day.

On the 30th of July, I woke up to a not so sunny morning. Instructions had been sent with the bed tea that we were all to report down by 8 ‘O’ clock in hall downstairs. At breakfast we met the Official team for the first time. Yatin briefed us of the duties that had been allocated, and I was lone in charge of the document scrutiny to be later joined by Shalini. After familiarizing me with my crew of 5, we set up our tables with the required documents, cards, tags, boxes and papers. Shalini soon joined us. Today was the day for the local participants to get their documents and vehicle scrutiny complete. Participants started turning up, but the turnover did not seem as intense as we started. There was a lovely wind blowing outside, no heat, the weather was befitting for us to sit back and enjoy the monsoon feeling and with the less turnover from participants we did have time to stare out at the lobby and exclaim at the beauty outside. By the afternoon we got busy with the participants pouring in. At times our table was a chaos, while we persuaded participants the importance of their missing documents and insurance. There were others waiting and in hurry to get through the document scrutiny and get to the vehicle scrutiny so that they could get all complete if any requirement was lacking. Evening 6’O’ clock saw us wrapping up having finished with the document scrutiny for the last person of the day. The numbers on the sheet including two and four wheelers had reached some 30’s only. That left us expecting a swarming turnover we might face the next day, as the outsiders were yet to arrive and a some of locals who had to turn up for re-scrutiny. Tired and hungry, i was off to bed by 10 after updating every one of the current data.

July 31st was not a sunny day as well. The sky looked pale, cold wind blowing, from the beginning it looked like it would rain. We were back at our desks by 9am. Few participants had already gathered and queued up for their scrutiny as we settled down. Today was the day for the participants outside Jaipur to complete their document and vehicle formalities. The day was scheduled to be action packed as it also held the ceremonial flag off in the evening followed by the pre-event press conference. It was going to be a very busy day. Today since morning participants had already started arriving in ones, twos and in packs. Hands were moving fast to cover up the extending queue of participants who had gathered and still arriving. Brief explanations were being given to participants and referred to the supplementary regulations for any information they required. Important instruction were being pinned up on the side board to avoid queries that could be gathered through them. The scrutiny team was on a roller coaster ride from the very beginning trying to accommodate all queries, checks and even help for the clueless participants, when it came to insurance, FMSCI license and completion of their documents. Track had to be kept that all received their id cards, meal coupons and certificates before they left the scrutiny desk. Amidst all this confusion and chaos monsoon played its worst cards for the officials that day. It started pouring cats and dogs by 10:30am in the morning. Participants were arriving drenched with news of others stuck en-route due to rain. Participants had to wait to get their documents photocopied from the shop outside or reach the insurance office to collect their required vehicle insurance, to help them avail the FMSCI license. With more numbers pouring in, advancement of work was getting stalled while more piled up. So went the proceedings the entire day, it was past 8 in the evening when we finally wrapped up at the document scrutiny. The flag-off had taken place and so had the press conference amidst the rain and a little sun in the evening. But the scrutiny people hardly knew anything. Pre dinner all officials were briefed about their TC locations and the chain of events to follow next day to make the Monsoon Ride a success. All queries were answered and a GPS, Data sheet and Road book was handed over to each TC team. All officials were to report at Jal Mahal at 3am the next day for their TC placement. A long and busy day was ending, preceding another long day. It was nearly midnight and the next day was to start early for all of us, everyone retired to their rooms to grab some sleep before they reported for duty.

1st of August 2010, it was 3 AM at night. Having collected our breakfast, we stickered our Gypsy and loaded it, we set out to reach Jal Mahal for the Official line up. 4 AM, all official vehicles followed Sudev sir. Having placed TC2, as the convoy moved on, one of the official vehicle, an Accent got stuck in the mud. The terrain for the event included rocky paths, as well as slush. Here, the previous day’s rain had loosened the soil beneath a small bridge we were supposed to cross and thus the car tyres had sunk in and the thorny bushes had punctured a tyre. Our Gypsy thus stayed back to help while Sudev Sir moved on with the rest of the convoy, leading them to their allocated TCs. Though we managed to get the car out of the slush and the tyres had to be replaced before it moved on, the WM MEDIA TEAM who had followed us in their hired Innovas got stuck in the same slush. Word was sent with the now, running fine Accent for help. The route had to be cancelled and a fresh start now had to be given. After re-lining up all vehicles as Govind ji gave a fresh start to the competition, Anirban and I went on recce to make sure that the 2nd half of Leg2 was in a motor able condition for the participants to pass through. The road seemed fine and having reported that to Govind ji, we were placed at our TC by Sudev Sir, for Leg2 of the competition soon after lunch time. No sooner than an hour had passed before Mr. Raju Verma, whizzed in to our TC in his Gypsy. Soon the others followed in their four wheelers and two-wheelers. All had passed our TC in an hour and a half time. The sweep team arrived not much later and we started our journey back to the hotel.

We then reached Angara discotheque where results were being calculated and prize distribution was to take place. Results were being calculated at the Angara, the participants were all present there. They looked tired but everybody had the look of anxiety, eager to know their stand in the competition. There was a constant buzz and every now and then a participant would come up and ask how long it would be before the results would be out. Finally, the wait was over as the results were hung up on the board with 30 minutes time for any objection by the participants on their individual scores. There was a lot, however amidst all the objections, explanations, happiness and sadness, the results were declared final. Prizes were distributed and the event came to an end with a closing speech by Govind ji.

It had been a tiring run of events. I was drained of all energy; my love for sleep was catching up. I had dinner and Anirban drove a sleepy me back to the hotel. 2nd August, the event was over but the essence still seemed to run in all of us, we had emerged another year old, a bit more experienced. We knew our shortcomings and our advantages. We had already started planning for the next year, implementing ideas to overcome our fall backs and building on our positives. A small group of us, who had not yet left the venue, sat in our room, drawing the outlines for the TMR 2011, planning to handle the challenges which lay ahead of Western Motorsports…

JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride 2010

We started organizing The Monsoon Ride in 2009 as an annual event with a vision of promoting motor sport, adventure tourism and tourism in Rajasthan and showcase the beauty of Rajasthan in monsoon, the effect monsoon brings to the desert state. We choose the rally route which covers less visited heritage and picturesque sites.

JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride ’10 was held from 30^th July to 1^st August, 30^th and 31^st were document and vehicle scrutiny days. The rally happened on 1^st Aug. Like in the 2009, once again rally was ceremonially flagged by Brig Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh ji MVC, Jaipur on 31^st July.

JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride ’10 had 88 registrations of which 72 took start 51 4wheelers and 21 2whelersl. Rally was run for than 300 kms. On 1^st August with Parc Ferme opened at 0330 hrs and frist car was flagged off at 0500 hrs from Jal Mahal, Jaipur.

Monsoon gods still were annoyed with us, after doing the road book six times due to rain washing off sections, first TC had to be cancelled due to heavy rains in the night prior. A restart to the rally was given at 0730 hrs with picturesque Fort Pratapgarh in background perched on a hill top surrounded by monsoon clouds

First leg concluded at Alwar taking route through Pratapgarh, Narayanpur. Near Alwar, 1000 hrs Rally had a snack break for an hour at a resort.

At 1100 hrs rally restarted with destination Jaipur taking route through Pratapgarh and Raisar which had a beautiful off road section through the hills.

Rally finally finished at Jaipur with me doing the finish TC. As soon as the rally finished the results process began and we were a little bit shocked with outcome, as who we thought of would win was not wining it, we rechecked the results and made ourselves sure. The stinger which made us happy was Pooja Sharma wining 2 wheeler category beating 20 boys. We did have some verbal protests which were aptly handled and concluded by Participants and officials.

Prize distribution was done for the rally along with some awards announced by us; JOHN SINGH Award for contribution and performance in motorsport from Rajasthan and ABHIMANYU award in remembrance of our dear friend.

Before concluding would like to thank all the Participants, JK Tyre, Nitro Power (AGS Infotech), Pink City Restaurant and Innovative Web Technologies to support Western Motorsports.

JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride 2010

Work had begun on The Monsoon Ride'10 right after ATV Challenge ’09. I was on recce almost whole year, on all my tours out of Jaipur I did look out for some interesting tracks. Before starting the road book I had done more than 5000 kms of recce and the route had turned out to be amazing. We had almost every geographical feature you can think of in this part of country and terrain to run a rally on but we could not settle in for a route as something or the other kept arising. First we had the Gurjar Andolan, we adjusted the route but Kms shot up, no lunch venue around the track…. It became a never ending process.

Amidst all this I suffered a heavy blow on personal front lost my mother and life came to a standstill. There was vaccum.... still it is there and will always be there.

Thanks to family and friends, was pushed out of the shell and was back to business on the wheel. After some more recce finally we had everything set; but some days before the rally on a recce with Video team came to know a huge wash off in the track due to heavy rains the whole axis of the route changed for first leg and had to do a change which I would never love to do, repeat of track, as there was no time left for fresh recce to be conducted. Road book was to be done again and on every trip for the road book there was a wash off in the section finally I had some welcome help from Mr. Yogesh Kalro. Somehow we managed to have a road book just a day before the rally.

Beside all these hiccups we did have everything in our favor, good sound backing of our sponsor’s mentors, patrons and above all the Participants. The Monsoon Ride ’10 was again sponsored by JK Tyre, Pink City Restaurant and Innovative Web Technologies. Nitro Power was a new addition to our sponsor list. Rally had a very good support from media also.

Participation is the axis around which an event goes, by god’s grace we were well placed, we had 88 registrations and we had to say no to more than 10 participants. Thanks to the participants and sponsors for having faith in us.

How can i forget my team to thank, Without whose support it wouldn't have been possible to conduct the RIDE. Hats off the team which kept taking pressure off me and made it a smooth run.

Western Motor Sports…. The Monsoon Ride 2010

Was really looking forward to The Monsoon Ride 2010…. Scheduled on 1^st august 2010 after the win in 2009.

Right from the onset….the day began beautifully on 31^st July… and as the ultimate drive tfrom Delhi to Jaipur had to begin… just discovered the teething troubles in my vehicle…. Amidst heavy rains in Delhi got my car rectified in time and some how left Delhi by 2.00 P. M. in the afternoon requesting the officials of Western Motorsports to accommodate us….

Well what a drive from Delhi to Jaipur just managed to report in time by 5.30 P.M. the stage was all set for the rally to happen the next morning at four….and met Shalini , Anirban , Pael , Yatin, Raj Singh Rathore , Anukraman , Praveen.. Mr.Mahaveer Singh Nathawat… and made many new friends…

A lovely morning dawned on 1^st August 2010….we being contestant no 7 were flagged off accordingly…

And then the Saga began…. Amrit and myself we're all set

to make a mark…. Working diligently on the road book and keeping track of the time , distance and of course the speed….

We did not miss a single chance to enjoy the lovely weather

…and the picturesque settings of Aravallis ….comparable to any of the hill stations with monsoon clouds touching the hills…. definitely with a unique character of their own.

The break near the third T.C. was also a nice unexpected experience…

and then soon we completed the first leg by missing an invisible 5th T.C. L ( still a mystery )

The things were going great and by 12 noon we had almost achieved our targets by half minute and completed 3three fourth of the rally ……. and were quite happy with ourselves…. And then the BANG happened in the off road section…. My dear car got hit by a stone …. Both ( the stone and the car )had hurt themselves…. The engine oil chamber broke down…. And all the oil was simply spilled over the off road section…..

Thanks to Siddharth and his colleague…. They helped us out by towing our car to the near by mechanic…..

Hmm…. the mechanic fellow in Pratapgarh promptly rectified our car { god bless him )….in 2 hours time… and then we could safely proceed to Jaipur…. But definitely missed the last 75 kms of The Monsoon Ride….

Well all is part of the game…. We had a wonderful time and The Monsoon Ride .

What a RIDE it was...!!

J.K. TYRES THE MONSOON RIDE.... The word will keep echoing in my mind for so many time. Sweat,toil,Passion,Exuberance,fun,nuisance,colors,shocks and MONSOONS. This episode of Monsoon Ride had all hues that a typical Bollywood BLOCKBUSTER has. And Indeed it was nothing short of one.
It had drama. It had pain. It had shocks. It had colors. and We dont know though but It might had some romance as well.
I am associated with WESTERN MOTORSPORTS since its inception, some time in real and some time in soul. The Monsoon ride was the event when I was here with body and soul both. Though My contribution was limited to final event only, but I suppose I would be excused for taking credit of whatever I did.
WM created The Monsoon Ride considering all those enthusiasts who wish to enter Motorsports but have limitations of TIME,Experience and Money. Most of the events offered by MOTORSPORTS CLUB today are either of extreme category, involve 3-4 days or charge hefty fees from Participants. Western Motorsports begged to differ. And We proved it by THE MONSOON RIDE, which was for all. We are serving as training ground for MOTORSPORTS in India and We are proud of that.
J.K. TYRE Monsoon Ride had around 80 Entries out of which 50% were first timers.
The Monsoon which served participants with beautiful picturesque route also created havoc by washing off the route twice.
But hard work and team effort by TEAM WESTERN MOTORSPORTS didnt let the havoc reach participants.
Rally culminated in a smashing way with all participants having a gala time.
Prize distribution ceremony was organized in Angara Disco.
Rally culminated with flying colors and satisfaction on the faces of TEAM WESTERN MOTORSPORTS.
More than a Motor sport event It was a saga of human endeavor and Passion. It provided a platform for people to meet. Thousands of relationship were made and people departed with heavy hearts with a promise to meet again.
THANKs Western Motorsports for giving us opportunity to meet so many wonderful people at one platform..

JK-Tyre The Monsoon Ride 2010 : The story behind the scenes

TMR 2010 – this were the only words that kept echoing in the mind of Anukraman and and the fellow team mates since the PD of TMR 2009.

TMR 2009 was a learning experience for WM . Thanks to the honest feedbacks of participants, sponsors, well-wisher, marshals, officials and of course our seniors from the motorsport fraternity. A lot of though was given on each and every aspect of the shortcomings of TMR 2009. The fact that the event management planning, with the even manager, started long before the first Recce for TMR 2010, speaks for the commitment of team WM for making TMR 2010 a grand success.

The first concern of Anukraman before starting the recce was that the route should be suitable for small and mid size cars. Hence most of the recces were conducted in a car through out the year. But then it was also a priority for him to ensure that the tracks chosen were not only demanding for both the Driver and the Navigator but also beautiful in a unique way so that we could give our participants an experience that would bring them as close as possible to the unseen beauty of Aravali during monsoons and make their rides memorable.

The first recce began in my ford Ikon on 29^th Sep 2009 . It was a 400+ k recce in which we discovered very interesting off-road sections but unfortunately each and every one ended on a dead end.

Months later a final recce (what we believed it was) was done on 11^th July 2010.Shalini had seen the track for the first time. She found the off-roads sections amazing. Safe enough for cars (subject to little precautions and technique), but also challenging enough to qualify for an extreme category rally. Also this time there were not one but two Infamous and Innovative “LOOPS” that freaked participants out during TMR 2009. We were all set to rock.

Little did we know that monsoon, which was the essence of the rally, the season that reveals a breathtaking beauty of Rajasthan, would show its darker side to the organizers of WM.

I met Anukraman at his home on the eve of 27th July. Just 04 days for the D-day. Anukraman and Yatin were in a mess. The rains had washed off the best section of the route. Fortunately one of the photographers for TMR2010 who had arrived from Bangalore was already in Jaipur. His experience as an organizer came handy and the final route was prepared just a day before the event.

30^th & 31^st July went well, at Pink City Restaurant, except for little rain on 31^st. Media Centre, headed by Pradeep Ji, Jatin Senger, Shobhit Saxena and Prateek Gautam and the photography team was doing a fabulous job keeping the event live on Facebook.

It was a sleepless night. None of us knew when one day ended and the other began. Before any one of us could get even a shortest of the nap, it was time for reaching the Park Farme and to start the placements for Leg-1.

Participants started entering the Parc Ferme and the line up had started. It was 4 o’clock in the morning yet the organizers could fell the heat. It was probably the pressure and the apprehension for the worst – Heavy Rains.

Sudev Sir had arrived and Anukraman had altleast one load off his head – Placement of officials. The convoy had left. We were all set for the Flaf-Off. Tony Dada & Yatin took charge of the start point. The first vehicle left at dot 0500 Hrs The Rally Was ON.

By now Anukraman was exhausted. The event had been through many unprecedented happenings by now. The physical exertion and mental pressure on him was huge. So we decided to hit the track in my car so that Anukraman could relax a bit and focus on the event activities.

Never had I seen such a beautiful morning in Rajasthan before. We were awed by the beauty of lush green Aravali ranges covered with monsoon clouds just as we entered Ramgarh. Pradeep ji was pleading us to stop the vehicle at the scenic locations so that he could get some good posts for FB. To his disappointment, pressure of the event did not permit even a single stop L .

As we were approaching Prapagrah, our worst fears came true. Incessant phone calls started coming to Anukraman that vehicle are getting stuck in the off-road section which was included for bypassing Pratapgarh village.

6000 hrs - There was a lot of tension at TC- . TC officials were advised to stop all the further vehicles and Anukraman went ahead for bringing back the stuck vehicles. By 0630 hrs the TC was crowded with vehicles.

Anxiety began to build up amongst the participants. Anukraman could sense what was to come. Something had to be done and it had to be done fast.

A new line was set on the foot hills of Pratapgarh fort. Few new instructions were given to each participant to reach a new TC from where the further instructions were available in the road book. We only wished that the rally if finished without any further hindrance.

Yatin shut himself in a hardly lit room at Angara and started the most tedious job – results. I tried to help him but I failed miserably. Raj Sir and Philip Sir meticulously checked the results and the provisional result was displayed in anagara by 2000Hrs odd Round -2 of trouble had begun.

While the Guests waited eagerly for the final results amidst the lovely ambience, music and wine at Angara, Anukraman and all the TC officials faced the fury and objections of discontented participants for the provisional results. No.2 put and objection and after a long discussion, debate and counseling the matter was closed. The experience & wisdom of Raj sir had really come handy at this critical juncture.

The event finished smoothly thereafter and the last goodbye were said after the dinner.

The event that was planned all the year long, the event that we expected to awe the participants had finally finished but with some twists, turns and disappointments. But as Raj Sir wisely said to one of the participant – “some times we plan to the best of our capacity and execute our plans meticulously, but still we fail for there is an unknown factor that can still change the outcome and that factor is – LUCK”

May be , we at WM fell a little short of luck this time.

Oh what a day it was!!!
It rained cats and dogs..
It rained participants..
I swear..Every official is dead(not literally)
Ceremonial flag off is day which is considered to be the most hectic day of a rally. It is the culmination day for all kind of scrutinies. Rush and Movement was felt at each and every counter.
Gods of Rains blessed the event,by cooling of boisterous Sun and sending cool breeze around.
Passion and passion...that was the only thing that could be seen oozing out. Heated discussions, clandestine planning was going on around.
Some participants were in group of two and some were with their team. People were getting nostalgic and talking about the old rallies where they had met earlier.
Motorsports events creates bonds.............Bonds that die hard. People meet, they become partner for events and they become friends for lifetime.
J.K TYRES THE MONSOON RIDE hopes to be one such event. We want to nurture so many things apart MOTORSPORT.
His higness Brig. Bhawani Singh Ji of Jaipur did the ceremonial flag off of the event. All the entries are done and event is ready to be kicked off tomorrow.

J.K.Tyres The Monsoon Ride 2010 has finally begun. The headquarter of the event was buzzing with activity all day long. Sweat was flowing, from the bodies of officials and participants alike and humidity was not the only thing responsible for it.

The action which we all were waiting has finally begun.

Western Motorsport is a club which is flying on passion of people associated with it. This passion was vigilant in the first part of this saga. Passion was floating as heated arguments and sweat, only to make the event a perfect experience.

In the wee hours, when I am writing this post, I can see tired officials. sleeping with a content on their faces.

Am greatful to be part of this amazing saga of human endeavor, passion and sportsmanship. People have travelled 36 hours and are staying away from their dear ones to make this saga a success.

Last year was a thriller and this year we’ve to make it even more exciting. As we countdown to the second edition of the Monsoon Ride, let’s elaborate on its newness.

To begin with, let’s provide for the greatest invention – the wheel. I dedicate this post to our partners IRA who are bringing Nitropower to us. IRA is setting up Nitrogen inflators for the participating vehicles. And, it’s on the house!

You might ask “why nitrogen?” The experts from IRA answer:

"The incredibly rough terrain of the track, corrosive air, rain and high temperatures are not going to be easy on the tyres. You can use normal air if you wish. But you need to take into account the fact that about one-fifth of air is oxygen, and oxygen predictably, at high temperatures and pressures (which we should remind you that you are going to encounter), is a very reactive element. The moisture in the air also absorbs and holds heat. So you now have a tyre that’s inflated with wet air which is going to get really hot as the rally progresses and also fluctuates more with the pressure.

Now, if you were to fill that same tyre with nitrogen you would have a tyre that responds amazingly well to pressure because nitrogen is "dry" and expands at a consistent, predictable rate so your tyre pressure is consistent. Also, the absence of moisture ensures that your tyres remain cooler. Science says that a tyre filled with naturally dry nitrogen will run cooler than a tyre filled with normal air. So using nitrogen is the best way to combat one of the most dangerous and eventful occurrence in motorsports; tyre bursts due to the buildup of heat and increased tyre pressure.

Apart from that, when you and your machine are racing against time, the last thing you want to do is stop at every station to check your tyre pressure and lose those precious seconds. Proper tyre pressure helps you keep the recommended ‘contact patch’ on the road way longer and reduces rolling resistances and you get a better grip on the road. Don’t forget that the rain is also going to make the track really wet and slippery so pump up on nitrogen so you can corner better on those tricky turns.

The Monsoon ride will be covering a really long distance hence we are providing nitrogen to ensure that tyres are at their best efficiency. Better handling and safety should be a strong enough reason to get Nitro-powered!”

We are happy to inform all motorsport enthusiasts that seeing the response from all over, we are bound to open the entries for our event JK-Tyre The Monsoon Ride-2010 before the scheduled date as we received too many calls,mails and queries regarding participation in the event.

There will be four classes in the event which will be run under two groups

As every time we say that we believe in giving chance to new comers so one day we thought why not give a chance to budding photographers to showcase their talent through our event. So then n there as always on phone the foundation of this photography competition which recently got over on 15th March 2010 was laid.

Within half n hour , a writeup was prepared , terms and conditions for the entries were discussed between me, Anukraman Sir and Anirban Sir and the competition was on air with me as its coordinator and the best part in which we at Western Motorsports are really good without thinking about its consequences. Just floated the competition and started waiting for the responses.
The time frame for entry submission was kept near about 2 months and we were hoping around 20-25 entries in this course of time and thought if we received these much entries our event is a hit.

And we started doing the most important part of our event that is Promoting it. Facebook , Orkut , mails, messages were all over the net. I would like to thank the team of motoroids.com, Mumbai weekend shoots , Delhi Bloggers and some other groups which helped us in promoting it.

I still remember when me and Anirban Sir were chatting on gtalk on the very last day of submission at around 11:15 P.M,we received around 15-18 entries within those 45 minutes as the competition was supposed to end exactly at 0000 Hrs and both of us were like "w00t???,what the hell is happening???"

At exact 0000 Hrs , I started counting the final entries and was overwhelmed to see such response from all the photographers from all over the country.From extreme north zones of India to down south , even we received one entry from a person living in Sweden and is going to come to India at the time of JK-Tyre The Monsoon Ride-2010.

We received around 78 entries out of which only 67 were accepted as rest of the entries were not in accordance with prerequisites of the event.I really feel bad for all those people who couldn't make it this time but there is always a next time and I hope you'll read all the terms and conditions carefully whenever you plan to participate in an event like ours.

Now as I told you earlier we never think about consequences , judging these entries is one hell of a task as we have to choose the best,have to stick to two main things which we have asked for in photographs i.e composition and timing. Our judges are gonna have a tough time for sure.

I want to congratulate all the photographers whose entries have been accepted and would like to wish them all the best for the results which will be out soon.Keep checking your mail inbox , our website and the facebook event page for more updates regarding this event and we promise you it will an experience of a lifetime and we'll try to give you a platform so that you can proceed and leave your mark in this field.

Western Motorsports has always believed in giving a chance to new people either in sport or other things related to our events.Might be a good news for budding photographers as we are looking for somefor our future events mainly JK Tyre The Monsoon Ride - 2010 to be held in July 2010.

We need 10 photographers to cover this event and they'll be provided with accomodation,food,and comfortable travelling expenses to Jaipur and back.Transport throughout the event will be given by us only.

As photography is all about right timing and composition which is all we want , You need to send us your 10 best pictures having good composition and perfect timing as well.

Chalchitra Expedition '09

The Chalchitra Expedition’09 was organized by Bring Your Own Film Festival (BYOFF) in collaboration with The Tourism Welfare Society of Rajasthan (TWSR) and Western Motorsports (WM). BYOFF was conceived as an independent platform for film-makers five years ago and has been held on the beaches of Puri since then. This year, BYOFF had put together a last minute team of film-makers and film students for an expedition through Rajasthan, coupled with a workshop for the students on documentary film-making. The film-makers were to interact with the students, guiding and giving them the impetus to create films heralding their own unique styles and perspectives. The resultant documentaries are to be show-cased at the next edition of BYOFF.

TWSR and WM provided logistical support to the expedition tapping the expertise in their respective fields of concern. While WM promotes adventure tourism in Rajasthan by combining motorsports events with historical destinations, TWSR aims to redefine tourism in Rajasthan by opening up new destinations and incorporating global best practices in the Indian tourism industry.

Rediscover Rajasthan. As I read the byline of TWSR an involuntary smirk came on my face. Having travelled through Rajasthan on some occasions before, it seemed like another attempt to catch the unwitting traveler’s imagination. Certain images immediately came to mind: desolate highways leading from one tourist paradise to another, imposing forts and embellished havellis, decorated camels, women clad in colorful ethnic dresses; and all the tourist kitsch that has become typical of Rajasthan.

Yet, as an aspiring film-maker myself, the expedition sounded alluring with its promise of close interaction with former and current students of India’s oldest film institute FTII Pune along with a handful of other independent film-makers. The possibility of observing how the visually rich landscapes would be perceived by diverse sensibilities was always interesting to learn and hone one’s own skills.

The expedition kicked off on a sleepy early morning from Jal Mahal, Jaipur. A sense of over-riding enthusiasm lingered heavily in the air as all of the participants wanted to make the most of a land and culture new to them. Mapping the vibrant colors, music, dance and song, the living traditions of Rajasthan, was a challenge cinematically and aesthetically.

After the ceremonial photo-ops and fanfare at Jal Mahal the expedition proceeded to the quintessential Jaipur attractions: Amber Palace and Jantar Mantar. As the evening settled in, the motley crew hustled back to the Pink City Restaurant, a hotel run by TWSR. Rajasthani folk dancers performed later, culminating the first leg of the 10 day expedition.
Early next morning we left for Bikaner, home of the famous Junagadh Fort. Several pleasant surprises came our way during the day: indicators of how the expedition would shape up ahead. Instead of the long, lonesome, often cold and impersonal highways we took the bumpy, narrow but welcoming country roads that led through dusty, unwary and unsuspecting villages. The locals in Rajasthan are a friendly lot, and we fielded their curiosity readily. The highlight of the drive came around noon, when we crossed the 2nd highest peak of the Aravalis. The loops leading to it are a strange sight in this otherwise lucid landscape. The peak is also home to a 1000 year old temple known as Harshnath. A row of windmills scattered around the top perfect the setting and add to the prominence the hill rightly deserves.

These intriguing roads have been unearthened by WM in their long grilling recces across Rajasthan for the motor rallies they organize. As a young energetic outfit, they are on a constant lookout for landscapes that captivate and yet are challenging for the participants. By the time we reached Shekawati, home to the famous painted havellis, the sun had cast its shadow on the land. Hurrying through a couple of havellis we saw glimpses of the painstaking details and designs that had made the embellishments famous worldwide. The darkness made filming/photographing rather cumbersome and unfruitful, and we decided to continue our journey to Bikaner. But we had seen enough to know that this district warrants for a timely and researched visit in the future.

The chill of the night at Bikaner caught some of us off guard, sending us scurrying for shawls and jackets. The next morning we headed for Junagadh fort, turning over another page in the annals of history. The fort and palace are set in huge grounds overlooking the administrative area of the city. The museum inside is very comprehensive in chronicling the history of the city and its fort, and is definitely worth a dekho. Our next stop was another out of the ordinary and interesting destination: a camel breeding farm and research centre, one of the biggest of its kind in India. There we had the rare privilege of watching the likes of Mr. Bikaner, Miss Jaisalmer et al, chewing cud peacefully, satisfaction brimming large on their faces.

The following day’s drive to Jaisalmer was easily the most rewarding and riveting. Shortly after we left, we had brief photo-ops with scores of Rajasthani women clad in traditional colorful clothes putting in their hours of work for NAREGA.

Lunch time saw us arrive at Kolayat, a small bustling town in the middle of the desert. But what makes this otherwise ubiquitous town unique is a lake blooming with lotuses in the heart of the desert! One could take a shikara ride or share the religious fervor of the numerous babas/sadhus lingering around the edges of the lake. The small eatery which housed our hungry lot also surprised us with its well managed response to our unannounced visit, without compromising on the quality or the taste of its offerings. The small town of Kolayat gave us several deep and fond impressions.

The journey ahead got more interesting as we raced, albeit in futility, to meet the sunset at a huge permanent dune. What had set our pulses racing were the sights on both sides of the road: a lush green landscape fuelled by the Indira Gandhi Canal on one and huge sand dunes on the other. Perched on a suitable summit, the views are nothing short of striking; both for the stark contrast they offer and the sheer volume of landscape they engulf in their reach. Being in the constant company of Dr. Mahaveer Singh Nathawat (President of TWSR) and Mr. Anukraman Singh Rathore (President of WM) , illumined me in no ends on the travails and tribulations of Rajasthan. Seemingly trivial to a casual tourist, the incisive information they share fills the nooks with sympathetic details and make travelling a much more inclusive and immersive experience. Women shoveling sand in a daunting landscape, a surreal boat ride and the visually dramatic drive; the day seemed to hold too much at times and we carried on, our spirits rising to a higher crescendo with each experience.

The next couple of days were spent in Jaisalmer, the city which for me perhaps epitomizes Rajasthan the most. The Jaisalmer fort is one of the few living forts still and is also known rightly as Sonar Qilla or The Golden Fortress. It houses a couple of museums, ancient Jain Temples, havellis and entrepreneurial city people. The narrow winding cobbled streets from the erstwhile ruler’s era seem to be burdened with an enormous sense of history and the friendly tourist shops dotting them make walks immensely rewarding. We also did the customary visits to the larger and more famous havellis inside the Jaisalmer city and the camel walk in the dunes of Sam.

Outside the city limits lies a village in ruins, the ghost town of Khaba. According to legend, it was abandoned in one night, as thousand fled to escape the wrath of the ‘evil’ Pradhanmantri of Jaisalmer Saalam Singh Oswal. The ruins run for a mile or two and the numerous windmills strewn in the backdrop add to the eeriness and give weight to the numerous creepy stories floating around.

The last leg of the expedition saw us making our longest single day haul yet, pushing from Jaisalmer to Pushkar. Enroute we stopped at the village of Khichan, which has been in the news of late for being the favored place of resting and feeding of the migratory Demoiselle Cranes. The breeding grounds of these birds are the plains and steppes of Eurasia and Mongolia, and many perish on the long arduous haul due to fatigue, hunger and attacks by predators. Here they are revered by the villagers for their vegetarian eating habits and for the practice of monogamy. Conversations with the local inhabitants gave us interesting clues about the recent migratory trends. From a handful of birds visiting the village some years back, it has now become a full blown migration with close to 10,000 birds resting in winters. The efforts of the villagers have not been in vain and now the Government of Rajasthan has taken note in view of the international fame the village has attained of late.

Racing ahead, we caught the world famous Pushkar Camel Fair a couple of days before its culmination. The low attendance of the cattle this year caught me with surprise and disappointment. The primary reasons attributed to it were our late timing (the best cattle gets traded in the initial days) and if you would believe it, recession! The villagers complained of the low prices most of them had been offered this year being hardly enough to cover their costs of travelling back home. There was much hum-ho at the festival with many cultural, religious and tourist activities being staged at different parts of the site.

The day the group split for their respective destinations we had an informal discussion wherein all the members shared what the expedition had entailed for them. The frequent sessions of interaction as planned earlier could not happen due to paucity of time mostly. This sole session did come too late but was not too little for sure. Numbers and pleasantries were exchanged thereafter.

Proceeding back to Jaipur as the expedition drew to a close, my face was split open in a wide unabashed grin. How the cynical smirk at the start, slowly transformed itself into an easy recognition of the richness of the vivid landscape eluded me myself.

Privet or Asalom Aleykum (Russian and Tajik greetings)!

I am Sharofat from Tajikistan pursuing Film Direction course at Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. I recently participated in Chalchitra Expedition ’09, organized by Western Motorsports, Tourist Welfare Society Rajasthan and BYOFF, Puri in collaboration, as a part of our workshop. It was first time that FTII workshop was organized travelling across cities in Rajasthan.

The Expedition started from Jaipur and covered Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Pushkar; ended at Pushkar with Pushkar Fair.

Firstly, thanks a lot to the organizers of the expedition and creators of such a beautiful program with medieval Rajput forts where voices and footstep of their inhabitants can still be heard, lots of folk dances with ringing ghunghrus and flowing ghaghras, camel rides on the sand dunes in peach sunset light, small havelies that became a bridge between past and present and the golden town Jaisalmer, that looks like an arabian fairy-tale with all these shining panels on the walls, which are put by sellers...
Rajasthan amused me by wildly colorful dresses and craft-making. Only after visiting Rajasthan I can perceive an idea of such a colorful world: People living in desert compensate the flatness of landscape by wearing red, pink, yellow, orange, green clothes and even their houses are very colorfully painted and decorated.

To me Rajasthan seemed to be frozen, I could meet people from the historic times in the preserved frescoes on the walls of the palaces or havelies. And then ‘meet’ them alive right around the corner. The famous style of moustache, the big eyes, the transparent veil covered women and their costumes… are really fascinating.

Right before the expedition I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to find right communication with local environment, which I had to document as a part of our documentary workshop. And what a surprise and pity was when people started to accept me only as a tourist, and demonstrate only "formal" touristic side of themselves, which they show to thousands like me coming to their places to discover exotics (but I was just a student of FTII...).
For instance, at the Pink City Restaurant in Jaipur, where we were hosted, we met a guy who was preparing Rajasthani puppet show. We got interested in the performance and we approached him. Befriended, he showed us the puppets, taught how to handle them and let us perform for a while. From being spectators we were at backstage performing. It was an awesome experience. I remember this incident because there was something which didn’t happened to me later in whole trip. Inspite of my previous expectations about communications with local people, I felt that I couldn’t enter the space behind that colorful touristic curtain and become "one of them" (like it happened with puppet’s show), but had to remain as a viewer.

Certainly, there was a great job done by organizers of the event, chalking out the beautiful route of the expedition and schedule, taking care of lodging and food, but the problem seemed to be that this expedition wasn’t designed for the documentary workshop of the film-students and their requirements. Firstly, due to very tight schedule (of course, organizers tried to show participants as much of Rajasthan as possible and that’s their ‘plus’). But for us, in my opinion, it was too much of information, you even didn’t know to what object to give prerogative to be shot. Also the saturation of impressions provoked tiredness… Cause of a tightly planned schedule most of the time we couldn’t stop wherever we wanted to shoot something on the way from one place to another. It would create unnecessary delay and shifting of all the plans. And of course it would be impossible for the workshop to have a separate program than the main one.
Anyway, if you didn’t try you wouldn’t have an experience which would be helpful in future, but definitely it was a lesson how to manage in unknown location you see for a first time and shoot in rolling rhythm.

Ok so I went to The Monsoon Ride 2009 organised by the Western Motorsports headed by the experienced and I would say versatile Mr Anukraman Singh Rathore and ace biker Raj Singh Rathore,over the last few days. Attached are my thoughts on the experience.

First off, yes, we went on the swift diesel. Originally, I wasn’t planning on attending. As I thought I wont be able to spare 3 days, though the event was for 1 day only but going to Jaipur(500 kms away) to attend a one day event would cost me 3 days. But after getting a call from my friend Chidanand Murthy who happened to be my Navigator for the event I decided to finally go for it.

So we (me, my wife n my little daughter, shes the one who enjoyed the most) left Chandigarh at 6 in the morning. The 500km drive took almost 9 hrs with the never ending traffic jams in Delhi (should have taken the other route) a stopover of 1 hr at a friends place in Gurgaon to reach the Amer Road Jaipur. Called up Anirban, the official (nice guy and always supportive) on reaching the picturesque Amer fort, though wanted to stop at the Fort for photography (clicked some on the move) but wanted to get the documentation and the scrutiny done at the pink city restaurant first. With the efforts of the very professional Shalini Mam and Anirban it was a breeze It hardly took 1 hr for all the documents completion with stickering and all and the scrutiny thing. The venue was good but it could have been better had it been on the roadside or something so that its a bit easier for an outsider like us to reach. The rally had a number of enthusiastic bikers with some coming from as far as Bangalore

We were asked to reach the flag off site, next morning, which was opposite Jal Mahal at 5:00 am, beautiful site with Jal Mahal on one side and beautiful scenery on the other reached the venue bit early so had got some time to move around the place and click some pics. Were given the breakfast packets to be had on our way I think that is the reason the average speed was given 30kmph on a nice Highway so that the breakfast can be had on the move comfortably LOL .....

The first leg started had to maintain a speed of 30KMPH too low for a road like Delhi Highway but rules are rules and in a rally no rules are meant to be broken(if you wanna win) Taking a U turn on the highway entered a wildlife reserve kind of place which was all gravel It was fun but a bit disappointed for the low speed due to the free-roaming wild animals(for which we were warned in advance) in the reserve area. Lots of slowing down and breaking in every turn, it was somewhat disappointing but that is what is called a TSD rally.

So after arriving at the finish of the Leg 1 at Fort Bhangarh the so called haunted place we had enough time to have our lunch and to visit the fort, Excellent food, but would have been better if those were prepared and served on the venue itself with giving a little more comfort to the participants and not to forget the Water. Being a first of its kind event by a new Motor Sports Club the efforts were commendable.

After finishing our Lunch we walked the path around the Fort, reading the information stands and taking pictures among the ruins of the fort. We saw a number of folks climbing the trees over the pond in the Shiv Temple situated within the fort and jumping into the pond, which we all thought was pretty nuts, but made for some neat photography. After the almost I hr walk around the base and lawns in the Fort, we reached to the top of the fort to find a big spectacular view of the Bhangarh village and the ruins of the fort.

On the very beginning of the leg 2 we were stopped by a herd of Camels, We lost some precious minutes wading those off but had coverred up the time lost in next few kilometers. The leg 2 went through small villages it was a great road, lots of twisties. We had a few spots where we found a good rhythm but again the speeds were kept pretty low and there was a lot of braking through the turns as the ride wore on. Then came the perfect spot, the catch, very well planned Bhul-Bhulaiya, a loop, this is was the finest spot of the whole rally this was a turn where almost everybody including the Dhurandars of rallying got wrong But not Chidanand (he is perfect at reading the road book), may what comes stick to the roadbook this is what I have learnt from this). The ride back from the Bhangarh fort to Jaipur was awesome, with great views of the Marble Mines, Forts on top of the hills and small villages.

After a long wait, actually it was not a very long one but 2 hrs seemed to be very long one when you have nothing to do but wait. Finally the results for both the legs separately came out there was a little problem in the results but soon it was sorted out. And there came the moment of joy we had won the event.

Then there was a celebration, drinks, & party Got the winners trophy from the JK Tyre the main sponsor for the event.

All told, a little more than 1000 kms of highway driving and 200kms of rallying. And a pretty fun time and well tasted the sweet win. Thanks for reading!

"Motor Sport" , a word that had never came in my mind even in my wildest dreams till I met Anukraman Sir , who used to tell me about Desert Storm, Raid-de-Himalaya and other motor sport events and I used to think that people involved in it must be really crazy to do all these kind of things.

But, this motorsport bug bit me also in September 2008, when I did “Indian Motor Car Rally” with his team and enjoyed every moment of it. I didn’t even know the ABCD of this thing but Sir told me only one thing about being an official in any motor sport event and i.e. “Bahot lagti hai officials ki” and this line of his came out to be true in all the events of which I have been part of, whether it was Indian Motor Car Rally (my first rally as official) or be it Desert Storm 2009 in which I went as his co-driver or would rather say “passenger”, The Monsoon Ride’09 & Polaris ATV Challenge’09.

The thought of forming a motor sport club came in our minds when Me, Anirban Sir and Anukraman Sir while we were coming back after finishing with Desert Storm 2009 and were having tea on a roadside dhaba and everything clicked perfectly and thus Western Motorsports came into existence after 2 months.

I still remember that telephonic conversation with Anukraman Sir when he thought of doing our very first event “The Monsoon Ride”. Few lines of the conversation which I remember are

Sir: I am thinking of doing a TSD event.

Me: Great. When are you planning to do that?

Sir: Next Month. Dates are 4^th and 5^th July and the event will be called “The Monsoon Ride”.

Me: What !!!!!!!!

Sir: What whoot ka time nahin hai, kaam shuru karo ... Entry form design karna hai , shuru ho jao.

And that’s how, it all began , everything came out of nowhere, sitting on laptop throughout the day, searching for different documents, rules and regulations of a TSD rally, making documents (Supplementary Regulations, DCOC manual, Time Cards, Control Sheets, Logo for the event, Logo for the club etc.).Discussing everything on phones, chats, mails working day and night till 4-5 or sometimes even 6 in the morning.(Gosh, I never studied this much for an exam also).

Then I went for the Recce, from Jaipur to Bhangarh, one of the most beautiful tracks I had seen. One thing which I have noticed about Anukraman Sir is his tremendous skill of finding tracks for any motor sport events in which he is involved, be it for the Indian Motor Car Rally, Desert Storm 2009 (The very first night section , yes I was the lucky one to accompany him in that recce also),The Monsoon Ride and Polaris ATV Challenge, each and every track found by him were appreciated by all the officials & participants.

We had only 25 days to go for The Monsoon Ride in which the core team of Western Motorsports(Anukraman Sir, Raj Singh Sir, Aazaad Sir, Anirban Sir, Shalini Ma’m) all of us worked like maniacs for sponsorships, road books ,logistics, planning and execution of the event.

Finally D Day arrived for our very first event “JK Tyre-The Monsoon Ride”.(Yes, finally we bagged in some sponsors JK Tyres, Big TV, Club Mahindra, Trendy Webs, Dhruvan and some more) and everything started as we planned & everything planned for the first day went on smoothly. We received 50+ entries in one month which was a great achievement for all of us being new and no big names from motor sport world.

The next day was very crucial for all of us as everything has to be perfect no matter what comes in our way. None of us slept for last two nights because of the last minute work load we all had, but I salute the spirit of every official of JK Tyre - The Monsoon Ride that everyone reported on time and worked like anything to make the event a success. Everything went on smoothly on the second day also, we did have some critical comments from the participants but we’ll make sure that those things should not be repeated in future. Critics are the part of the game and if healthy one’s which we fortunately had are good for development of an organization.

I would also like to mention Team Northern Motorsport for standing beside us and were there for us for every single moment when we felt we were lagging somewhere. Thank you JD sir, Sudev Sir, Philip Sir, Bharat Sir, Deepak Sir, Rahul Sir, thank you TEAM NORTHERN MOTORSPORT.

While we were gearing up for The Monsoon Ride, came another good news about our next event which was India’s first ATV event “Polaris ATV Challenge”. Right after finishing with The Monsoon Ride, we started working for the ATV event which was announced in the Prize Distribution Ceremony of JK Tyre-The Monsoon Ride.

Polaris ATV Challenge was a 3 day event and god was kind enough to shower his blessings in form of rains throughout the event. A total off-road event with heavy rains throughout the day was a real treat for everyone in those hot humid summers. I would love to mention “Chhotu” (Shalini Mam’s Bolero) who was our companion throughout the event. We had a great time with everyone present right from officials and participants (especially Mrs.Deepa Malik, hats off to her spirit).

All n All it feels great to be a part of something like this, I had always wanted to do something adventurous and would like to thank Anukraman Sir for giving me a chance to experience something like this and accepting me as a part of his team .

Polaris ATV Challenge 09

Hello Friends,

We are just over with yet another event, Polaris ATV Challenge 09, which was India’s frist ATV Rally. Doing back to back events is not easy but TEAM WESTERN MOTORSPORTS pulled it off beautifully. During “JK Tyre - The Monsoon Ride” itself I had suffered a leg injury, an internal one but that was not going to stop us as a word was given to conduct Polaris ATV Challenge 09. With all the hiccups taken in stride the event was a good success.

As nothing new we also did have differences with the presenter of the event Trans Asia, but if these are not there what is the fun what is the challenge. I do agree we lacked on our part on more than one front but that was due to getting pissed off due to the behavioral discrepancies from Trans Asia, I put my hand up and accept the fault atleast on our part as it was not at all professionalism, but humane.

The event was basically executed in a week’s preparation as we did not have to work on the entries only the execution which was taken as only the rally execution and not as the wholesome rally including the peripheral. It was a great learning experience and has improved us on our logistical arrangements, now the team has the confidence of pulling off an event anywhere with whatever magnitude, but we are not going to fly on the confidence, we would like to progress gradually.

It was a drastic change in climate and from no rains for a fortnight god had mercy at last and it rained almost all through the event, words of Mr. Rusy Kohli came true, weathermen watch out for your careers. The rains were too heavy for day 3, the Leg 2 SS 1 had to be cancelled as going through a particular section of this could have caused injuries as it had become water logged and too slushy.

The event was completed without any protest or mishap. The only mishap which occurred was a breakdown in an ATV of competitor Raj Singh just before the start of Leg 2 SS 1, till then he was leading the rally with a great 3 minutes lead. Rusy kohli and Ashish Bahl emerged winners of their respective categories and Rusy won the overall trophy also. At the time of Prize Distribution Ceremony it was drizzling all the time, the ceremony was conducted in the rain all loved it and enjoyed it.

The effort of all the officials and marshals was highly commendable as they withstood the rain, they rode on their bikes all the way from Jaipur to the stages in heavy rains to do the duties, I salute their passion to the sport. Will not like to point out any single official’s effort but effort of Shalini Singh has to appreciated, she got late in starting off from Delhi but did not take it as an excuse but drove all alone with her CHOTU (bolero) all the way from Delhi reached Jaipur at 2 in midnight and was on her toes by 4 and on stage to take up her duties. HAT’S OFF!! Shalini Hat’s off to you.

Polaris ATV Challenge too just like JK Tyre – The Monsson Ride was very well supported by people from different motor sport groups, that is the sporting spirit which I wish would wish to continue and prevail. Sidharth Singh of Jaipur Motor Cycle Club was the COC, Adhiraj Singh of Rajputana Jeep Club did the starts of day 1, Vikas Singh of Team Jeypore was there for the day 2 starts and Anil Gautam from SAAHAS with his entire team came and did the flag-off.

There was another lady in the event just for her sheer passion and commitment to the sport, DEEPA MALLIK a lady paralyzed waist below came all the way from Ahmednagar, just to take the flag off and ride a few kilometers into the stage. Seeing her courage and passion we deployed a jeep to back her up in the stage with her support system. Hat’s off to you too Deepa.

The Polaris ATV Challenge is over now and we are planning an event in winters. The event would be a tough one for participants as well officials but am pretty sure it will also be through as knife through melted butter. It would also be on TSD format and we are looking into putting in separate categories off-road and tarmac both for 4 wheelers 2 wheelers and there would be another element which I would not like to disclose as yet, but can assure you it would be a spine chilling experience. The event is still in planning stages but can assure you of a new experience and would be trying to eliminate all the flaws which were there in the earlier events

So hope to see you in winters, keeping fingers crossed.

Living My Dream !!!

Always wanting to be on wheels and being the active part of the motor sport world is what i forever dreamt of. I often laugh and quote that god mistook my wish and put me on a wheel-chair for good. Relegation to an indoor like was something i was not going to settle for,and thus began my search for opportunities where i could turn the wheel of fate and redesign it to include adventure and fun activities in the lives of wheel-chair bounds.

And one such opportunity came my way when i learnt about the India's first ATV rally organised by Western Motorsports with Trans-Asia Distributions.

I saw some potential of being able to participate as i did a record making drive on my ATV on tarmac road. So I could ride an ATV but a formal rally and that too off-road was a different thought and a scary one for a woman paralysed waist below.

I am glad that Rusy gave me the permission to participate on a condition of filling up formalities of paper work.But I'm also glad that the officials at Western Motorsports welcomed my unending queries with so much ease. I know I was very difficult with my bag full of questions about the route, my backup vehicle and even a place for my husband in it and the list goes on. My heart felt thanks to Anukraman and his team for being so patient with me. They not only made things look easier for me but also encouraged me. If it was not for the comfort zone and acceptance created by them, I dont think I would have mustered up the courage to request
Ashish Bahl of Adventure Wheels lending me one of his ATVs. A request to which he immediately responded with a positive and with it came with his participation as well.

As I landed at the scrutiny point, I could hardly contain the excitement but yes the reception was a little confusing as there were two counters. We did have to shuttle between the two a couple of times as the T-shirts and leaflets were given inside the hotel and documents had to be submitted outside at the scrutiny counter.At it took me a while to figure out wether we had to report at the Polaris counter or the scrutiny manned by Western Motorsports. The stay arrangements at Clarks Amer were good and definitely gave the event a great standard.

I wish there was a better media coverage and attendance at the press conference. A lot of effort and money was spent on arrangements but I sincerely felt a lack of media presence to do justice to match the magananimity of the event.

My parents were there to witness my flag off and my hubby dear to lift me in his Arms and made me sit on the ATV. It was indeed a dream come true for a person who had little hope of ever seeing a podium.I still remember Anukraman's words just before the Flag-off, "Don't keep thanking us,Our motto is to promote motorsports and we at Western Motorsports are just doing that.You wanted to be outdoors and its our duty to help you do that". Seriously they all did a wonderful job.

I had a special vehicle to back me up. Though I just did a few Kms on the Day 1. As I did feel betrayed by my body balance the off road terrain demands skillfull support of legs to balance the ATV,but still slowly I covered a few kms. and at every turn and bend there was a marshal to assist me but those few kms meant the world to me. I was then transported to finish line. Luckily it was a pleasent day and hunger was the only thing which bothered and not the heat, while I waited for everyone to reach the finish line.

The most pleasant surprise came that afternoon, when in the middle of nowhere were the awesome refreshment meal we were served. I am a caterer by profession and can say with a lot of authority that they were the best sandwiches i ever had. The juice and the brownie was the ultimate treat one could ask for....WELL DONE Western Motorsports. It would be not justified if I miss out on the mention of the visual treat we got by watching the hair raising descend of the Marhsal bikes and jeeps from an accute slope, Phewwww..... you guys at Western Motorsports are dare devils.

I have to commend Anjali also for keeping up with boys/men. She surely deserves a pat on her shoulder.

I loved this venue and the food of the break up party "The Farms", but I wished the audio visuals were not delayed so much. I also wish the announcements were a little more amicable and we all maintained the essence of sports and sportsmanship.

Overall I Loved the experience of a being a small part of the history in making. The Beginning of ATVs in India. I was happy that Polaris ATV Challenge gave me a platform to convey to the world that love for outdoors and adventure sports is a must. It gives you strength to fight the odds of life and facing challenges in good spirit. I hope I have been also able to achieve the aim of spreading the message of ability beyond disability. Through my participation i wanted to convey that the words adventure and motorsports go pretty well with physically challenged.

Just a few mindsets to change.

Western Motorsports – an organization into rallying led by Mr. Anukraman Singh, the president and with his team did a wonderful job. I would not say that it was the perfect event but I would not crib about any thing.

For me as a participant – I got interested into Motorsport some 3 years back, but due to reasons beyond control could not take it up. I got interested because some time back I got an offer from Maruti Suzuki to be a part of this small TSD format rally in Delhi. Honestly I did not understand the gimmicks of the format but was looking out for more such rallies.

Western Motorsports came into contact through one of the networking sites and I was game for it. Till 3days before I did not have a Co driver, but I was so keen to do it that I sent the participation form without details of the Co driver. Then I got my co driver, a good friend Hari Subramaniam. He finally agreed and I was glad.

The Road trip to Jaipur – We started at 7 from Delhi and were driving cool as we knew we had to report till 11 AM. The route was amazing, the roads were good. We took a stop for breakfast. Finally we reach the place – The pink city Restaurant. I don’t know about others, but we had troubles locating the place. The directions were good but since the place was a little in the interiors, we kept looking out drove a little here and there and then with support from the local tourist guide we reached the place. Well I am sure there were other people also looking out for the place. Since everybody could have reached the road and it was so close to the highway, I am sure everyone would agree the choice of venue overall was good.

At the venue the process was very well organized. People at the registration desk were so well organized. I would really like to appreciate Shalini Singh, who actually worked like a Pro. The support from the other team members Kausiki and Pael needs to be appreciated as equally as Shalini. I should not forget to mention the efforts of Mr. Bharat Upadhyay.

So from the registration process that was pretty simple (apart from all the paper work formalities involved) we went on to Yatin. The guy who sure was keeping the sponsors happy. Giving away the sponsor stickers, mementos and kit bags and so on.

Once we got the kits and all we were suppose to make our cars ready for the scrutiny process. We went on to put all the stickers and got on with the scrutiny process. So with some tits and bits on the procedure and dealing with the scrutiny guys we were all set to roll.

The next step was the briefing. We had some time and went out to grab a bite. After that was the time for some solid gyan. We got some important tips from one of the experienced person. This guy Pradeep came in real handy just before the race. He gave us some very important and interesting lesson to do something in the race. I think without his support we would have not even been found anywhere in the race. Can’t thank him enough for all his help.

This ended the long exhausting day. So the 4^th July was over and we went over to sleep.

5^thJuly 2009 – The D Day

So we reported for the rally at 4.30 AM, while the race was to start at 6 AM. Again must say the things were well organized and everything was really smooth. Breakfast was served to everyone who was a part of the rally. With our car numbered 34 and a 2 minutes time gap between every flag off, we were flagged off finally at 7:18 AM. So after a long wait we were finally in the race. The speed – 30 KMPH, Special instruction – follow the traffic rules, don’t over speed, keep the villagers and live stock safe came in from the organizers. We made one more rule for ourselves – Enjoy the race to the core keeping it really professional.

Once on the track we had a good co ordination between the two of us – Me and Hari. We did really well in the first leg. The leg was suppose to end at Bhangarh fort. The idea was to maintain an average speed of 30 kmph between the TCs. We did not knew the TCs, which is a format of the TSD. So we travelled on a route given by the organizers. The route was amazing. We saw some really good mountains, a fort on the hill top, a few villages. It was also amazing to see how the kids waved us on the way. It was some thing not out of the ordinary life. In the first leg we reached without any trouble.

We reached in time with little mistakes. Bhangarh was an amazing place. So away from the rough rash and fast paced life of cities, in the interiors of Rajasthan it was some place.

The venue was nice if we were suppose to go there for a look at the fort. But unfortunately since this was the end of leg 1, and we were to stay there for some time, we could have been taken to a place where there was some electricity or shade atleast and some water to drink. Since Mr. Anukraman, president Western Motorsport, did extend an apology, I am sure everyone can get over it. We can for sure coz we went on to explore the fort. The place was nice and well maintained. I am glad we went out for the excursion.

Despite all odds of not having water and electricity, we got some good food. Thanks to the organizers.

The leg two started and we were flagged off. The riders ahead of us sped off as soon as they were flagged. We spoke to the man at flag off and agreed that they did not do a right thing. But once we were on the track and close to them we realized how smart they were. The sped off to stop a little ahead so that they could grab some cold drinks and water. We realized they were sensible and we also stopped for some water and drinks, and post that we sped off to cover the time lost. Now the SPEED WAS 40 KMPH, same instructions, same rules.

We were unfortunate that we could not complete the race. We were going real good till we found the first TC and realized that we were somewhat off time. We were driving well after that, but due to some problems in understanding the signs we took the road not travelled at all. We drove into sand and got stuck there. To be honest since we were driving really good we did try really hard to get the car out of the sand, and what we got was a breakdown – Broken clutch plate and worn out pressure plate. I would really like to thank Mr. Raj for his support to help us reach the local village and arranging help. I would also like thank the locals who helped us reach jaipur by towing our vehicle for all the repairs.

The car was ready to roll again but the race was all over. We had lost it due to a no show. Though we could not complete the race, but the event was so much worth being there. There was so much of learning, networking, making friends in the process etc. We missed the entire prize distribution ceremony, but did go back to see the entertainment program, enjoyed the food so much, as we were tired and disappointed.

We were really disappointed because we did so well in the first leg, had a good start in the second leg, and we so sure that we would make it to the top 10 if not top 5. We were 6^th in the first leg, and for a first timer it was some achievement.

I cannot thank western motorsports to organize such an event. This event was a mix of everything – LEARNING, ENTERTAINMENT, NETWORKING, FRIENDSHIP, and surely some good EXPERIENCE.

We would never forget this event. This is going to go down as a part of life history.

Overall I would like to summarize in a couple of lines. Western Motorsport is a team of enthusiasts. A well coordinated effort, an amazing route, well organized event, some healthy competition, a lot of support from the organizers and the participants.

Not only would I never miss an opportunity to be a part of the western motorsport event, I would love to be part of the other TSD formats.

Though I did not complete the race….. BUT THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING……….LET HOPE I CAN MAKE IT TO PLACES AND WOULD TRY TO ACHIEVE A LOT FROM THIS…………THE ADRENALINE RUSH IS ON…..

Our experience at The Monsoon Ride - 2009

Well it was indeed an all together different, wonderful and an outwardly first time experience The event started for us on 4^th July when we started from Delhi to Jaipur at 6.00 am .The drive from Delhi to Jaipur with Amrit was the first highway experience of our own and we enjoyed the drive and reached Jaipur by 10.30 AM..

On reaching Jaipur we reached the venue for the rally assemblage . Later we went for our papers to be filed in yes this was a slightly long process as our papers were not complete. Here I would advice that proper instructions should be issued to new entrants for helping them in their paperwork as they are new to the system.

It was after the paper scrutiny we got the kit along with stickers from sponsors etc and stuck them up on our car so our Wagon R was looking quite smart and cool ....... the car scrutiny demanded the change of the spare tyre this took us some time and thus we missed the briefing for the rally.

Any way Anukraman and Yatin did explain us about the briefing part. And that called for the day of 4^th July.

So on 5th we were to report at 4.30 A.M. the rally was to be flagged off at 6 am,

It was a beautiful morning the sun rising over the advent of the sport event. The best thing about this rally was that this rally was a TSD format…. so it was up to us to calculate the speed in order to cover the specified distance in stipulated time……and the tip given was to adhere to the speed given. This format was a fun task, as we had to keep track of time and as well as it was relatively safe. Adding to it, there were checks in between the route, so that one does not get lost. It was difficult in an intellectual way and that’s why along with men, there were so many women participants.

The other aspect was the drive.........that was planned for Bhangarh fort as break point the route was really a very nice one it took us through wildness of rubble road for 10 kms and rest was tarmac.

It was really beautiful to be in the midst of Aravalli range with no one around as there was a time gap between two competitors so they were not overtaking each other and hence we were driving all alone amongst the mountains , farm lands, and a part of it being sand dunes as well and kacha roads and stones also. The route on which we traveled was not one usually goes through, so it was so new and picturesque.There were small villages throughout the leg…and we even remember how village children waved us when we passed through one.

Few forts were also seen on top of the hills all that was very amazing in form and size and we enjoyed the drive too...the leg 1 was pretty simple and we finally reached Bhangarh fort.

Bhangarh Fort was a good assemblage of monuments……. if one can go back in time in such monuments it is quite interesting to imagine how people actually must have lived and how the area would have been with all its populace and now at this moment of time how they lie abandoned and speak of the times past gone..........

The second leg started for us at 12.15 and here the speed to be maintained was 40 kmph and here they created some confusing loops for us and u know what I did...............

As we were losing time and going in wrong directions I sped up my car and got my car stuck in a small ditch in a bad way............. by chance there was a tc and many people from the organizers team were around so they literally picked up my car and helped me being out of that ditch......... thanks to them,

At the end of it we had no idea how we had performed nor had an idea whether we could cover the previous minutes as well in second leg or not ............ well otherwise our coordination was pretty good, in order to find out our way... so that was it..

Later we went for prize distribution and imagine what…….

We bagged the third prize in the women’s category............that was great indeed being there for the first time and being on stage as well…..

Well the whole experience was very adventurous and an achievement in itself and definitely different ............. and participating in the rally was also absolutely new. experience...........

We really liked the drive ....lovely landscapes and views ..... with total mathematical action packed TSD format.........and very safe and challenging as well..................

And very supportive and helpful team of organizers……Anukraman President of Western motorsports and his team did a good job.... and all of them were looking thoroughly worked out............this shows the hard toil in order to make the event a success for all. Congratulations to them for organizing an action packed motor sport movement with a beautiful drive and thrilling moments.

We would surely make up for other events like this again ………..

The Monsoon Ride 2009

So friends we are finally through with the "The Monsoon Ride 2009". This was the first event we did under the banner Western Motorsports. Earlier we did an event for an NGO, but this is the one which we all toiled for day n night.

The credit for the success of the event goes to Mr. Yatin Gupta and Mr. Raj Singh. Yatin is the guy who was on the computer 24*7 working on every thing forms documents everything and it was same for Raj but on the cell phone either sending some sms or breifing people abt the event. I would also like to thank Mr.Anirban Mandal and Miss Shalini Alok Singh for getting grilled in the proceedings. Its very true without them the event was not possible. I wanted to say these words at the time of the Prize Distribution ceremony but could not as not a good and seasoned orator. At the time of the event running each and every official gave his best go and the results are there to be seen, the hard work is always paid off well.

Would like to thank JK Tyres for all the did in very short span of time and for such a new group and event, hope we did the event well.

And there was the big brother Northern Motorsport : Mr.Jayesh Desai, Mr.Sudev Brar, Mr.Philip George, Mr.Bharat Upadhyay, Mr.Deepak Baluja, Mr.Rahul Dutt who helped us out with the equipment, with the know how, they were there every where to support us and didn't let anything go wrong, from the word go, in the true sporting spirits. I feel they have set a standard which should be maintained always and every where in the sport.

I would also like to thank Mr.Shashi Garcha from FMSCI who was the Steward for the event and helped us to the fullest.

The support from the participants which made the success story was unbelievable. There were the participants coming from all over the country. The zeal the passion for the sport was booming. Some participants were there who had cut across their league of extreme and participated in a TSD event which is all together a different ball game that shows their sporting spirit.

The Sun has risen for Western Motorsports, we keep it shining it in full glory and beeming, basking in its full glory.

The event started on 4th July and finished on 5th July, 4th was the scrutiny for documents and vehicles. In the evening a press conference along with the competitor briefing was held and the days proceedings were culminated with the ceremonial flag off by Maharaja Sawai Bhawani Singh ji MVC, Jaipur. Maharaja Sahib being a military man was early as his usual self best. Maharaja Sahib himself is a big sport which he showed by coming for the event despite being not in best of health, he had to go for a medical check up the very next day.

Next day the proceedings started as early as 0430 hrs as the line-up, was scheduled for then, which we in our technical language call "PARC FERME". The real action started at 0615 hrs with the first car flagged off. Everything went off smoothly and the rally reached destination for end of leg 1, Bhangarh. Till Bhangarh it was easy going, but the participants didn't know what laid in store for them ahead. Lunch packets were provided to all and here we faulterd as we had not arranged for water, apologies straight from the heart, next time it will taken care off in better way.

The leg 2 started at 1215 hrs, rally heading direction Jaipur and almost every body was caught with an eye candy, here a TC don get me wrong, rather correct. A tc Tc was placed in such a manner where the participants would see and forget the track and enter the TC leaving the track and another one was placed so that they get a penalty for wrong order entry into the TC and the plan fired well all were caught unaware, the target was achieved, what a satisfaction it gives when a plan is made and implemented and the desired results come out. This is the punch line of Western Motorsports "Execution to Perfection".

The rally ended without a single mishap with gods grace and not a single protest was there.

The Monsoon Ride

This is a Motor Sport Rally based on the TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) format .It starts from Jaipur goes to the ruins of Bhangarh town and fort and back to Jaipur on the same day. The track is going to be nearly 220Kms.The route is all tarmac except a track of 1.5 Kms gravel.The route goes through scenic Aravalis with lots of dips and curves. Enroute you will find some beautiful architecture and forts.
On the outskirts of the Sariska Sanctuary, set amidst forests, watered by murmuring streams and with the imposing backdrop of the Aravalis, lie the ruins of Bhangarh. The well-planned city was established in 1531 by Madho Singh, younger brother of the famous Man Singh of Amer. Even in ruin, the meticulous town planning, in keeping with the Indian system of caste-hierarchy, is impressive. For half a mile along the main road, are shops on either side-perfectly symmetrical and harmoniously balanced, sings of a prosperous urban center.The Johari Bazaar of Jaipur resembles the architecture here. Specially worthy of attention are two temples ornately carved in stone and marble. Legend veils the reasons behind the abandoning of the enchanting place. Famine, war pestilence, a slow decline, a queen's or a magician's curse..whatever the cause, Bhangarh remains hauntingly desolate today except for the ubiquitous monkeys, peacocks and the rare visitor, Internecine quarrels had, however, already caused the shifting of the capital to 32kms away, where the remains of old monuments can still be seen.

Western Motorsports is a small group of enthusiasts who are not satisfied with the calendar of activities in India. We feel that all the activities related to motorsports in India are very less and scattered over year.
So we as Western Motorsports plan to serve as an Umbrella to organize small Motorsport activities round the year, may be every week. We wish to bring more people in this amazing sport. We want this event to be accessible for all.
